Merry Christmas! It is almost that time when we get all the decorations out, sing merry songs, and celebrate Christ’s birth and His dwelling amongst humanity. Christmas is a wonderful time of year to rejoice in Christ Jesus and reflect upon the truth that the King of kings left His throne to endure the flesh of man and make a way of salvation for all those who believe. Beginning October 4th, we will be having choir practice in preparation for our Christmas Night of Worship on December 6th. Whether you have participated before, can  sing, or you’ve never joined us and don’t think you can sing very well, we want you! It is powerful when a choir joins their voices together to proclaim praises to our God, and you will want to be a part of that. I was recently reading the book Night by Elie Wiesel in which he recounts his experiences during the Holocaust and German oppression of Jews throughout Europe. Wiesel gave a speech during his accepting of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986 and it was printed as a preface to the book. As I was reading the speech, one quote struck me. “Action is the only remedy to indifference: the most insidious danger of all.” I know that Wiesel was saying this in the context of his experience as a child in concentration camps, and the horrors he saw there; but, as I read this, my mind began to wonder to a Christian’s faith.

How often does indifference creep into our walk with Christ, the living out of our faith? Far too often! Whether it is indifference in the disciplines of prayer, reading God’s word, worshiping the Lord, or indifference in sharing the gospel with those that need to hear its wonderful truth, we live with indifference. In Romans chapter 12, Paul implores believers to be of action.

9 Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. 10 Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. 11 Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. 12 Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. 13 Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality. - Romans 12:9-13

Verse 11 reminds us not to be “slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit.” In other words, don’t be indifferent! Don’t live your life making prayer, Bible read, and worship at the bottom of your check-list, as if they aren’t important. Don’t think that the only time we are called to worship is Sunday morning at church. Don’t spend time in prayer only when times get tough and you need help, but rather do as verse 12 informs us to do, “be constant in prayer.” May we love our neighbors enough to share the gospel with them, as if life depends on it, because eternal life does depend on it.

Instead we must be a people of action! We must be a people who love genuinely, stand with what is good, “rejoice in hope,” patient, prayerful, and hospitable. These things honor the Lord, and create in us a desire to serve Him. May we not live a life of indifference, but one of action; action for the glory of God.
