Strength in the Lord
7 The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and I am helped. Therefore my heart celebrates, and I give thanks to him with my song. 8 The Lord is the strength of his people; he is a stronghold of salvation for his anointed. 9 Save your people, bless your possession, shepherd them, and carry them forever. Psalm 28:7-8
David declares with confidence that the Lord is his strength and his shield. David understands that his help comes from God. When he feels weak and full of fear, David relies on the strength given by God’s grace. When he is running for his life from his enemies, David knows where protection comes from; it comes from the Lord.
David follows up this declaration reflecting upon his experiences; “my heart bursts in him, and I am helped.” David does this, as Spurgeon writes, “without a trace of hesitancy.” David remembers all the time that God has been his strength and been his help, and in these experiences his heart is filled with trust in the Lord.
In December of 1941, Winston Churchill addressed the Canadian Parliament two years into World War II, reassuring them of Britain’s resolve to push back against the evil of Germany. Churchill speaking of Britain’s history said, “We have not journeyed all this way across the centuries, across the oceans, across the mountains, across the prairies, because we are made of sugar candy.” Winston wasn’t just speaking of the strength of the nation or government of Great Britain, but to the strength of its individual citizens. The citizens were resolved to fight to the end, to be strong in the face of evil.
As believers, you and I can have that same resolve, not because of ourselves but because of the strength we find in the Lord. The Lord is our comfort and shield, and even in our trials we can praise the Lord as the end of verse seven says, with a song we give thanks to him. We are not made of “sugar candy” for God is our shepherd, protector, and the source of our strength.
When we feel weak, whether it be physically or spiritually, may we remember Psalm 46:1 “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” God is present in our lives. He is near in our troubles, and they are known to Him, so may we take refuge in His comforting presence. God is enough; enough to satisfy. His strength is greater than all other strength, so press into His presence in your time of need.
Let this be the prayer of your heart:
“You are my strength when I am weak.
You are the treasure that I seek.
You are my all in all.”
