When the Congregation Sings

There is something powerful that happens when God’s people gather and join their voices together in praise of our Holy God. It isn’t magical. It is simply our response to God’s revelation of Himself to us. We, as the church of God, declare who God is and what He has done; and there is great power in doing so. I know for some that come to church each week don’t love singing, or feel like their voice isn’t good enough, but I want to encourage each of us to actively participate in worship every time we gather.

16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. - Colossians 3:16

In their book “Sing!” by Keith and Kristen Getty, they write:
God’s people have always witnessed to the truth through their singing. In the Old  Testament, the faith of the Israelites could be clearly heard in their songs. And many of the lyrics of their hymnal, the Psalms, showed their awareness of other nations listening into their singing, and called them to praise God too.”

When we sing of the goodness of the Lord and sing of His wondrous works, we are a powerful witness to the might of our God. This is a testament to those in the room that have yet to receive Christ, and often helps them to hear to the truth of the gospel. Singing is also a witness to other believers that have gathered. When you boldly and loudly proclaim that you were “washed by the blood of the Lamb,” or that you are “fighting a battle that You (Christ) has already won,” these are and should be wonderful encouragements to believers in the room, no matter if their week was amazing or terrible.

Keith and Kristen Getty also remind us:
Worship isn’t primarily about music, techniques, songs or methodologies. It’s about our hearts. It’s about what and who we love more than anything.

If it is your testimony, that you love God more than anything, then you must sing and worship Him with all that you are. Testify of His glory by joining your voice with fellow believers. Praise His holy name by lifting your hands. Love His church by loving the people of the church. May we never forget that it is a great honor we have to be able to worship a living God!
