Our Life in Christ

Are there times when you are going about your day, and all of a sudden, a song from your childhood rushes into your head? It could be “Jesus Loves Me” or maybe a nursery rhyme. Those simple little songs can carry some deep theological truths. Simple, but necessary for our faith! You probably remember “This Little Light of Mine.” It is a simple song, but a wonderful charge to us as Christ followers!

This little light of mine
I’m going to let it shine
Oh, this little light of mine
I’m going to let it shine

There is a familiar passage in Matthew 5 where Jesus is telling His disciples how they should live their lives in the world. “You are the salt of the earth.” (Matt. 5:13) “You are the light of the world.” (Matt. 5:14) What a great reminder and encouragement to the believers of 2025 in how we should live in the broken world we find ourselves in. It is a challenge to us to be set apart from those who live for the world, to be different. In all things, live for God, giving Him the glory and honor that He deserves.

13 “You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet. 14 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. - Matthew 5:13-16

How can we testify that God has changed our lives if to those around us our life looks the same? If we live the same as the lost, have we given ourselves to the Lord? We often make the mistake of trying to work out or live out our faith on our own. We try to use our wisdom and strength to grow our faith or to share our faith. This is foolish, “for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.” (Phil. 2:13)

We can have reliance on God and know that He is and wants to work in our hearts! When we feel weak, we can rely on His infinite strength. When we feel lost or unsure, we can rely on His perfect wisdom. When we seem to have lost all hope for tomorrow, we can rely on His renewing mercies. When the darkness of the world is pressing in all around us, “the LORD will be your everlasting light.” (Isaiah 60:19)

“You are the light of the world.” Wherever there is faith in Christ, there is light, for Jesus himself said that those who follow him would not walk in darkness (Jn 8:12). Genuine faith in Christ turns a person from darkness to marvelous light and transforms him into light in the Lord so that the light pours forth from the windows so as to be seen by others. The believer is appointed to be a lighthouse to others, a cheering lamp, and a guiding star. His light will be increased as he learns more of Christ. He will be able to impart more instruction to others when he has received more. But even while he is a beginner, his faith in Jesus is in itself a light.” - Charles Spurgeon
