Go Beyond in Kids’ Ministry

What will your legacy be? When your time on earth is over, most of your possessions will be given away, sold, or donated; but the investment you make in people—that’s what will truly last.

I think about this often because of my grandfather. When he passed away 16 years ago, I only wanted one thing: his old green Stanley thermos. I fondly remember the thermos rolling around in the floorboard of his truck as we drove out to his ranch. It wasn’t the thermos itself I wanted—it was the memory of him. He left me a legacy of hard work and perseverance. That legacy shaped my life.

As Christians, we are called to leave a different kind of legacy—a legacy of faith. Scripture reminds us to pass on God’s truth to the next generation (Deut. 6:6–10; Psalm 145:4; Psalm 78:4; 2 Timothy 2:2). Parents and grandparents play a vital role, but the church also shares this responsibility. That’s why we have a kids’ ministry.

Kids’ ministry makes an eternal difference in two ways:

  1. Teaching God’s Word - Children need regular exposure to Scripture to shape their beliefs and worldview. God’s Word is the single greatest influence in helping kids grow into strong Christian adults. This is why we need dedicated teachers!
  2. Building Christ-Centered Relationships - Kids need to know other godly adults who will encourage them in their faith. As a father, I’m grateful for the leaders who pour into my children. They hear plenty of spiritual instruction from me, but their AWANA and Life Group leaders have a special impact. Every child needs trusted adults who will show them the love of Christ.

Where Can You Serve?

We have many opportunities for you to “go beyond” in the kids’ ministry:

  • Teachers: Sunday Life Groups and Wednesday AWANA discipleship program
  • Coaches: Upward Sports Ministry (Basketball & Cheerleading)
  • Helpers & Care Roles: Nursery care, AWANA support, VBS, special events and more

Many roles don’t require teaching—just a loving spirit and a servant’s heart. Every volunteer must have attended Oakhill for at least six months and pass a background check.

Bryan Gotcher

Bryan was born in Russellville, Arkansas and has lived in many different places including Texas, Michigan, Kentucky, and Indiana.  He is a graduate of Boyce College (B.S. in Biblical Studies) and The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (M.A. in Christian Education). Bryan has been in full-time vocational ministry for more than nineteen   years.  Bryan is very excited to be serving at Oakhill as the Senior Associate Pastor and Family Pastor. He has a passion to see physical and spiritual needs met locally, nationally, and internationally.  He wants to encourage Oakhill to follow Acts 1:8 and bring the gospel to the ends of the earth.  He also has a passion for family ministry.  He desires to see families partner with the church in their child's discipleship.  Bryan has been married for 22 years to his wife, Kristi, and they have four wonderful children.  He enjoys reading, listening to music, University of Kentucky sports, and spending time with his family.
