Missionaries are Heroes!

When you hear the word hero, what comes to mind? Perhaps a comic book character in colorful tights, or maybe a soldier or first responder—someone who runs toward danger to protect life and freedom. These individuals are certainly heroes; but there’s another group of heroes that often goes unnoticed: missionaries.

Missionaries leave behind the familiar for an uncertain future. They follow God into the unknown, taking each step in faith. For Christians, missionaries should stand as examples of courage and devotion. Yet, many of our children know more about Marvel superheroes than about real-life heroes of faith.

Consider these names: William Carey, Gladys Aylward, Adoniram Judson, David Livingstone, Hudson Taylor, Jim Elliot, and Lottie Moon. These men and women, along with many others, shaped history through their obedience to God’s call. Their stories have been told for generations, but sadly, many children today have never heard them. As Christian parents and leaders, we have an opportunity—and responsibility—to share these stories.

Missionary work can be traced back to the Apostle Paul, whose efforts helped spread the gospel across the ancient world. Later, the Moravians became pioneers of organized missions in the 1700s, sending hundreds of missionaries worldwide. Inspired by them, William Carey founded the Baptist Missionary Society in 1792 and sailed to India the following year. His reports home sparked a movement that continues to this day.

Missionaries willingly leave behind modern comforts, familiar cultures, and even family ties. Despite advances in travel and technology, separation from loved ones remains difficult. Many serve in places hostile to Christianity, risking their lives for the sake of the gospel. Their commitment reminds us that there is no greater calling than to follow the Lord wherever He leads.

This is why missionaries deserve to be honored as heroes. Their stories should inspire us to live faithfully and boldly share the gospel in our own communities. Even if we never set foot on foreign soil, we can encourage and support those who do—and help ignite a passion for missions in the next generation. There are still countless people who need to hear about Jesus.  I pray that God sets the next generation's heart ablaze for missions. Parents, by sharing the stories of missionaries, we can help fuel that fire!
